More Advanced Commands All Dogs Should Know

The following is a list of the a few more commands that all dogs need to be familiar with and why.

Leave it

No one wants to have to worry about their dog stealing food off of their plate while they leave the table for a second or eating anything questionable that they come across on a walk. Teaching your dog how to "leave it" will not only keep your dog from stealing your perfectly cooked steak, but it will also keep your dog from eating things that are dangerous. Leanlix makes a fun training treat stick called Dishwasher Dinner that would make a great reward for your dog leaving your dinner alone!

Drop it

Sometimes our pups are like kids we just can't watch them every second of every day, but when we do leave them alone for a moment then check back in on them and find they have chosen to pick up or chew something that is dangerous or off limits this command helps to make the resolution easier. Teaching your dog how to "drop it" can help your dog to drop, with less resistance, unwanted foods and other things that could hurt them once they have picked it up. For a reward try a great chew treat, our Sitstay 6" Bully Stick is great high value treat perfect for rewarding preferred behavior.

Focus

Teaching your dog how to focus on you (rather than the barking dog next door or anything else that is distracting) will help your dog to stay out of trouble. You will want to start simple, in a non-stimulating area start by standing in front of your dog. Start to walk backwards and when the dog follows you and pays full attention to you, reward your pup with a click from a clicker or a training treat. As the dog advances start adding in distractions and make the distance between you and your dog greater. This is important for reinforcing who is in charge and who they should pay most attention to, even in busy and distracting situations.

Heel

Have you ever walked a dog that doesn't know how to heel? It can feel a lot more like the dog is walking you. The command "heel" simply means that the dog must walk directly next to you instead of behind or in front of you. The dog is required to keep pace with you, only stopping when you stop. Walking your dog is important for their health and your health, and teaching your dog how to heel will make the experience a lot more enjoyable for both you and your dog. This skill helps your dog know that you are in charge of the walk and that you are the alpha in the pack. This skill is also a must have if you ever wish to walk your dog without a lead or leash. Try using our great Cloud Star Treats for your heel training sessions.

With these 4 commands in your tool belt, you and your dog can navigate almost all situations life throws your way. They will take a lot of practice and consistency. But in the end, you will feel like your dog should wear a cape and badge everywhere because they behave like a super dog. Always be patient and remember positive reinforcement goes a long way in dog training. We have great training treat suggestions listed below, and these advanced commands are easiest learned after the basics are solid.

TESTIMONIALS

  • "Foofie Poochies is a excellent grooming salon. The shop is very clean, Dogs are well taken care of. I have been taking my dogs there for over 8 years. The owner makes sure all dogs are up to date on shots, is very comforting to your dog when it enters to take away any fears you or your pet has, this I have seen first hand many times. They will make you aware of anything they suspect on your pet. My dog had a tick once and the owner even gave me the tick in the bag in case I wanted to have it checked. I have recommended friends to Foofie Poochies because I feel they are a very good grooming salon and are knowledgeable in grooming any type of dog. Also, if your dog has a health issue, the owner is extremely considerate in working with your pet, I have a dog with a health issue and she watches my buddy very closely making sure he is ok. One thing, they do stress you honor your appointment or at least let them know in a timely manner if you have to cancel. I trust them completely!"

  • "Best groomer in Hoboken! We have been taking our two maltipoos here since we moved to the area 6+ months ago and Doreen does such an amazing job with both of them! She is very patient with both as one gets nervous at the groomer and the other is full of high energy (and I imagine she is difficult to keep still for grooming). They always look so good and smell amazing after! Doreen is always so nice and happy to see our pups. They love her and the sweet treats she gives! She offers a lot of different services that are affordable and never has long booking waits. Highly recommend taking your dog here!"
